Few places in Israel have so much to offer its visitor as the Sea of Galilee region.  The area has a history reaching back over two thousand years and is the site of many important religious events for Jews, Christians and Moslems.  The Sea of Galilee, Israel's is largest inland freshwater lake and at 206 meters below sea level is the lowest body of fresh water on the planet.  The lake is surrounded by rolling hills and lush vegetation and home to many different animals – none dangerous, don't worry!

The area is rightly considered to be Israel's Tuscany by virtue of its climate and its agriculture.  Many different crops are grown here, from bananas and dates to wine grapes and fish.

Because of the agriculture and the rural atmosphere, the area is also home to many excellent wineries and produces of excellent cheeses and is known for its amazing variety of restaurants, many offering unique cuisine based on home grown products.
The Sea of Galilee and the surrounding area is also full of many fascinating archeological sites just waiting for you to come and explore them.  The ancient Roman city of Beit Shean, the antiquities of Tiberius, Gamla on the Golan Heights, the sites of Jesus' miracles or the tombs of Jewish sages and rabbis.

Tiberius is the largest city in the region. Founded in 20 CE and named after the Roman Emperor Tiberius it has, for centuries, seen many momentous historic events.   Today a thriving town, the city has much to offer the visitor from ancient ruins, to therapeutic hot springs and some really great beaches on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.  Be sure not  to miss trying some Saint Peters Fish, a delicacy straight from the waters of the lake!

With so much to see – you need a place to stay

With so much to see and do, you need more than a day to fully appreciate the Sea of Galilee.  As befits a region where tourism is one of the major industries, there is no shortage of place to stay from five star hotels to camp sites, from vacation villages to intimate and romantic holiday villas set in the heart of the countryside.

Many of the small villages and kibbutzim in the region offer excellent and reasonable accommodation for visitors looking for comfort but whom also want to be close to nature and to enjoy a relaxed and intimate atmosphere.  Accommodation includes log cabins suitable for a family or a romantic getaway for a couple, complete with Jacuzzi.  Many offer breakfast and other meals; a range of massages and other therapies and all are more than happy to help you decide what to do next.

One such spot that I can heartily recommend are the "Golan Rooms" on Moshav Ramot.  10 luxurious cabins, set into the hillside, surrounded by greenery and with a view over the waters of the Sea of Galilee.  The cabins are outfitted with everything you need to make your stay perfect and two have even been specially outfitted to accommodate the disabled.
But wherever you decide to stay, one thing is certain – after experiencing the Sea of Galilee once, you'll be back for more!
